Unforgivingness is an issue that many people are faced with. It’s doesn’t matter if you are a believer or non-believer in Christ, I’m sure there are individuals who may have hurt you with their words, or actions in some sort of way and these unresolved issues caused you to hold something against them inside your heart.
When you see or think of that person there is an emotion that rises up in your heart. You might get angry, mad or upset when being in their presence. Just being next to them affects you. Why is this, it is because you have not fully forgiven them and you are carrying a heavy weight within your heart. unforgivingness is like a dark spot in the heart. It is piercing and painful. It has the ability to cloud the soul.
The truth about the matter is that regardless of what that individual(s) did to you, you have to forgive them if you want to be free and move forward in your life to live how God intended. Making the decision to forgive and move on in your life is one of the most powerful actions you can take to remedy sickness, unhappiness, depression and so much more. You might be saying but it’s hard for me to forgive them. They did me so wrong and it is unfair how they have treated me and my family. This person doesn’t deserve my forgiveness. In these kinds of situations Christ has given you the ability to forgive by his Holy Spirit who is a helper and can help you if you whole heartedly want to forgive. The Holy Spirit can strengthen you to forgive and walk in love.
The bible says and they will know that we are Christians by our love for God is love.
How do I know if I have an unforgivingness issue?
It all depends on how your heart responds when you are in the presence of that individual. For some people it makes their heart rate go up due to the emotion of anger rising upon them. Others simply get a feeling of disgust, irritation and frustration in the case of seeing the person face to face and even just hearing that person’s name bothers them. Now, take a moment and think of situations when these feelings or similar ones came upon you when in the presence of the person who hurt you. Some of us might not be truly aware of who exactly we may have been harboring in Unforgiveness against. Just ask the Lord to examine you and bring to surface those people who you have any bitterness, resentment and unforgiveness towards.
True love always forgives
1 John 4:20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen?
The creator of the heavens and earth, the Lord God Almighty, desires to see his love manifested in your character even to those who seem unlovable. While we were yet sinners Christ died for us. He who was without sin became sin for us. So then how much more should you forgive those who have betrayed you, talked about you, cheated on you and maybe even stole from you. This doesn’t mean you have to agree with their actions and ungodly behavior this simply means you must realize that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. It is a mistake to be righteous in our own eyes because as human beings we see and interpret things with limited understanding, limited wisdom, and limited knowledge. For the foolishness of God is wiser then man. (1 Corinthians 1:25)
1 John 4:7-8 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Yes the above scripture is true; everyone that loveth is born of God. According to scripture you are not of God if you are not following his commandment of Love. Just like being in a relationship with your spouse if you want to have a healthy and loving relationship you have to learn to forgive them each time they hurt you or the relationship will stay right there where you left off, arguing about the same thing and getting upset over the same things over and over again. That’s not true happiness. Who could survive in a relationship like that? Could you imagine if every time you sinned against God he kept throwing it up in your face over and over again even after you asked him to forgive you? That’s just not fair we all deserve some mercy and grace.
1 John 3:10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.
Unforgiveness is the barrier between your prayers being answered
Mark 11:25-26 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye ought against any, that your father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive neither will your father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.
First thing first! If you fail to exercise forgiviness with others then God can’t forgive you. You will reap what you sow. If you want to be loved then sow seeds of love. If you sow hatred, you shall reap hatred. In some kind of way a manifestation of hatred will come back to you. But if you practice mercy then you will be shown mercy. It may not even be displayed to you by the same individual but God will use others whom you have never expected to demonstrate acts of love and mercy towards you. For the thing that you do in secret God will reward you openly. For many, unforgiveness is the challenge standing between them and their deliverance, financial breakthrough, blessing and provision. Don’t let your prayers be hindered any longer. It’s time to make the decision to forgive.
2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
Can you image living a life healed and with God hearing your every petition, prayer and supplication? This is possible to those who are willing to obey his voice and follow his ways.
Just like stress can be linked to poor health-Unforgiveness is linked to unanswered prayer.
Unforgiveness & Your Healing
To all believers out there, I want you to know that our issues have the ability to manifest in our tissues. Unforgiveness is the real spiritual poison that in many is the root of cancer, fibroids, tumors, high blood pressure and more. It starts by holding all the issues inside which eventually form and develop into tangible real illnesses. Issues manifesting in the tissues! That’s why it is so important to forgive because it causes you to release and let go of those dark, deep, hidden issues. Beloved, it’s time to be free.
Who are you holding on to? Did you know that until you truly forgive that person is with you wherever you go? When you rise and when you sleep. For example, imagine giving your last dime to a family member who was in need. This money was all you had and you had to put off what you were going to do with it to help them out. A month passes by and now you have no food and gasoline for your car and you heard that they had just received some extra cash from a reliable source. You call them and tell then you are going through a really tuff time as a result of some income not coming in on time and you ask them if you can have $50.00 and they BOLDLY SAY” sorry, I don’t have it and you know that is a lie.
This person who is a family member let you down they failed you when you really needed them. It left a big pain in your heart. Now, every time they come around a frown surfaces on your face. Your smile is turned upside down. Every time they speak you feel a burning in your heart. For some reason you can’t seem to stop talking to several people about what this person did to you. You are constantly bringing it up all the time and re-living that situation. You keep opening up a wound that can’t get the chance to completely healed. This is what I mean when I say that person is with you wherever you go. Imagine 9 people hurt you in 3 years’ time and you never truly forgave any of them. So that would mean you are carrying a heavy weight from your mom, Jim, your pastor, the church usher who gossiped about you, Bridgette the so called best friend who betrayed you, your ex-boyfriend that cheated on you, your aunt, your uncle, and your boss for unfair treatment at work. Now from all those people you are carrying hurt, pain, rejection, bitterness, sorrow, sadness, pain, offence, frustration, anger, self-pity, fear, depression, and insecurity while they are happy and have moved on in their life not even thinking about you. No wonder so many people in the world are walking around mad all the time. Look at all that they have been carrying.
How to respond to your enemies
One way to respond to your enemies is by blessing them. Treating them how you would want to be treated. Respond to hatred with love. Now this doesn’t mean to be taken advantage of and become an enabler or doormat. Being an enabler is someone who doesn’t allow a person to grow up and experience the consequences for their actions. The enabler is always the safety net, allowing themselves to be used and many times preventing God’s plan to bring a person closer to God himself. Being an enabler is not love. It causes people to stay in a place of complacency and immaturity. The enabler is responsible for the people who can who cannot grow or stand on their own. Their growth and development was stunted by the ungodly intervention of parents and/ or grandparents. Be kind around your enemies and if your enemy hunger feed him but by all means don’t allow a person to abuse your kindness. You may have heard the saying you don’t have to like me but you have to respect me. God is looking at how you respond regardless of how a person behaves around you.
Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.
When it comes to enemies are you doing the following: blessing them? Blessing them does not always mean financially. Treating them good? Praying for them?
Matthew 15:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.
There are some detrimental consequences to not forgiving a person. Forgiveness is so powerful that it can revolutionize your physical and spiritual life for the good. It is the exact opposite with unforgiveness it can dramatically alter your destiny and influence your spiritual life eternally with horrible consequences. In the New Testament book of Matthew is a story of Peter asking Jesus how many times a person should forgive someone who repeatedly sins against him. Before Jesus answered Peter replied by saying seven times and Jesus said seven times but until seventy times seven.
Explore this parable as taught by Jesus:
Matthew 18:23-35 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants. 24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents. 25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made. 26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt. 28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest. 29 And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all. 30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. 31 So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. 32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me: 33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow servant, even as I had pity on thee? 34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. 35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not everyone his brother their trespasses.
Here it is the truth out of the mouth of Jesus. Let’s pay attention to where it says how the servants Lord called him and then said O thou, wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt shouldest not thou have had compassion on thy fellow servant as I had pity on thee. Lastly, it says and the Lord delivered him unto the tormentors. A person who does not forgive as the Lord God has forgiven them is wicked in the eyes of God and they can’t be forgiven of their sins which they have repented of because they have chosen not to forgive others. The person’s eternal destiny is with the tormentors in hell. How do I know this because there is no torment in heaven where God dwells. In hell/hades is Satan’s kingdom where demons torture and torment the people who didn’t chose Jesus as their personal Lord and savior and it’s for those who didn’t keep the Lords commandments as a standard for their life. Hell is a place of eternal suffering and horror. What a powerful lesson on unforgiveness. Yes your decision to forgive someone is just that serious this is one of the hidden concepts that most pastors and teachers don’t place too much emphasis on. A person could be wise in their own eyes doing church work (kingdom work) and still miss the mark because of unforgiveness.
Satan the father of lies, the deceiver doesn’t want this truth to bring light to people. There is a battle against every believer’s soul. The enemy uses his tactics and strategies to try to wear the saints out. But there is hope found in the word of God. This is the reason the devil tries to distract people from reading the bible because it exposes how he works and the word of God has the tools to set a whole generation free.
God has created us with free will. Use your free will to make the decision to change your spiritual and physical world with the act of forgiving.
Forgiveness looses the grip of the enemy, changes your destiny, releases Gods power to heal you, keeps you in right standing with God. Forgiveness is the doorway to your answered prayer and so much more.
Before saying the below prayer write out a list of the names of people who you know that you have an ought against and also write the names of those who you feel you might have an issue with. Just to cover all ends. For some this list might be short and for others it may be 20-30 people long. Don’t forget to include forgiving yourself and if you have ever been mad at God for any reason put that there too.
Now here is a simple but powerful exercise to show you how to forgive. It really works.
(Pray Out Loud)
Father God, I realize that it is always your will for me to forgive just as you have forgiven me. Today, I chose to forgive all those who have ever hurt me. I ask for your Holy Spirit to guide me as I open my mouth to confess those who I have had any unforgiveness against and to release all resentment, bitterness, anger, hatred and offence held against them.
(Exercise 1)
In Jesus name, I forgive ___________________ for hurting me when they………(say how they hurt you)……………….. I release every wound, hurt, and pain which you have caused me. I extend mercy, grace and love to you just as a extended it to me. I now release you and the situation into God's hands.
Now, Breath in Deeply then Breath Out a Few Times. As you do this see yourself being free and healed. Release them!
The above prayer is simply a pattern that you can follow. Do this for each person on your list. One person at a time.
Step 1: Say the person name
Step 2: State the emotion (hurt, pain, offence, sorrow, frustration, rejection, etc…)
Step 3: Speak about what they did that caused you to have the above feelings.
Step 4: Confess out loud that you release (bitterness, resentment, anger or whatever you have felt towards that individual.
Repeat the prayer as many times as you feel needed.
Final prayer:
Father God, thank you that you have given me the strength and ability to forgive. By faith, I let go all the hurt and pain that people have caused me. I declare myself free from every wound. By the stripes of Jesus I now receive total victory and healing for every area of my life. O God, restore the years which have been taken from me and heal my land today, heal my mind today, and heal my heart from rejection, depression, sorrow and pain. Create in me O God a clean heart and renew the right spirit within me.
Thank you Lord. In Jesus Mighty Name Amen!
